2005 Toyota Avalon Technical Preview Web Module
Challenge:
Quickly get in the flow in an overflow situation
When new models roll out, Toyota’s service technicians need to know what’s new and what’s changed. Some changes are big, some little, but all are important. To keep informed, service technicians get a technical preview — a Web-based heads-up to let them know what’s on the way.
Toyota’s training approach and quality are excellent. So far, so good. But with so much new information in 2005, the Technical Training Department was faced with some additional time-sensitive work. They needed supplemental resources to match the growing volume of work.
Specifically, they needed capable development of the 2005 Avalon Technical Preview Web module. But could they trust an “outsider” to quickly get up to speed, match their standards, produce outstanding results — and work in a tight time frame? They’d soon find out.
Solution:
Mirror, mirror, design the module
We started by studying their 2005 Avalon source materials and current Web modules. Our goal was to act as an extension of the training department, mirroring previous efforts and matching the high standards.
We worked with a subject matter expert (SME) to learn what was new in the vehicle. From there, we created an outline, meticulously designed storyboards, and collaborated on which elements to animate or make interactive, and how to do it. When everything was set, we worked closely with the Flash developers to make sure Toyota’s expectations were met, if not exceeded.
Ultimately, the work went live in a seamless manner. The quality met Toyota Technical Training’s high standards, and we substantiated our unofficial nickname, “Chameleon Associates.”
