Genentech E-Learning Course
Challenge:
Help multiple audiences master the Master Control System
When Genentech came to us, they were experiencing significant growth and opening a new location. The rapid influx of new employees created a strong need for efficient training. To maintain high quality standards, Genentech trains employees — veterans and new hires at every level — to fully understand the Master Control System (MCS), the backbone of their operation.
Our job was to create a turnkey, streamlined e-learning solution that would educate everyone — without prompting the non-technical to glaze over in confusion, nor the technically versed to glaze over in boredom.
Solution:
Assess needs and materials, then organize, organize, organize
Previously, Genentech trained employees on the MCS with an instructor-led and self-study course that had evolved over the years. But Genentech had outgrown their existing resources and wanted greater efficiency. Our work was to blend the existing live training and self-study presentation to create a single, cohesive, understandable course that anyone could take anytime.
We needed to ensure that the audiences didn't simply get exposed to the system, but fully understood it. This was essential, because the e-learning module was set to replace the instructor-led training. It needed to exceed "show and go" and ensure "show and know."
Our effort began with a thorough review of the existing materials and a needs analysis to determine what to repurpose and how, and what else the module might benefit from. We attended the facilitator-led training classes and immersed ourselves in the self-study materials. Then we began organizing. And organizing. And organizing.
Digging into an extra-large medium
After analyzing Genentech's needs, the audiences, and the existing materials, we set about using the e-learning medium to the maximum.
The technical nature of the Master Control System — and the need to train different audiences — made it critical to parcel the information into understandable pieces, seed and thread information carefully, follow a well-planned logic-and-learning flow, and repeat and test key points without becoming didactic. We chose language thoughtfully, to accommodate all levels of technical knowledge.
We created a highly interactive experience, to engage participants fully, prevent boredom, and foster greater comprehension and retention. The e-learning medium offered the ideal avenue. We used rollovers, pop-ups, animation, drill-down opportunities, sound, and a printable glossary to create a dynamic user experience. We worked with Genentech's team in person and virtually, to map the module's path and features and to incorporate feedback.
I learned all that?
Today, Genentech — and its employees — benefit from an efficient, pleasant e-learning experience. The learning is consistent company-wide. The module steps participants through the MCS in a friendly manner. Reactions at the end are typically, "Wow, I learned all that?"
The Master Control System, mastered faster.
