Sexual Harassment Training Video
Challenge:
Transform a one-hour TV special into a national program for change
Sexual harassment and hostile work environments are often misunderstood, gray-area topics. Does an off-color joke constitute harassment? What’s the difference between a cranky day at the office and a hostile work environment? How should a person — or a company — handle these situations? Each topic brings plenty of emotionally and legally charged issues.
A client came to us with a half-hour video that had been edited from a one-hour television show exploring sexual harassment and hostile work environments. She asked us to help create a Sex, Power, and the Workplace training program.
Solution:
Clear, informative materials that shed light and empower participants
To handle these sensitive topics, we used straightforward language and educational approaches. We recognized that audiences might feel defensive or intimidated about the topics, so we took care to ensure materials and activities neither implied accusation of inappropriate conduct, nor invalidated someone who might be experiencing harassment.
We sought to inform and train in an unbiased manner, with useful takeaway messages and how-to ideas for everyone — those who aren’t experiencing either situation, those in “victim” or “abuser” roles, human resources personnel, corporate officers, managers, and administrative staff.
By shedding light on the topics, participants came away with a greater understanding of what is appropriate and not, steps to take to remedy negative situations, and ideas that promote greater workplace harmony.
We developed full — and half-day workshop options, and created the facilitator guide and participant workbook.
The program has been extremely successful, and is still in use more than 10 years later. We recently updated the training to reflect changes in legislation and public policy.
